生化/生理作用
HMBS (hydroxymethylbilane synthase) encodes a protein that belongs to hydroxymethylbilane synthase superfamily and is expressed in erythroid cells. It is a cytosolic enzyme that plays a crucial role in heme biosynthetic pathway for catalyzing the head to tail condensation of four porphobilinogen molecules into the linear hydroxymethylbilane. Defects in PBGD gene leads to cross-reacting immunological material (CRIM) positive forms of acute intermittent porphyria (AIP).
