5-Hydroxytryptamine 3 receptor (HTR3A) belongs to a pentameric ligand gated channel receptor family. HTR3A is also called 5-HT3. Serotonin receptor type 3 (HTR3A) is encoded by two different subunit genes called HTR3A and HTR3B, which also has variants. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is a bioamine derived from the amino acid tryptophan. HTR3A is located on human chromosome 11q23.2.

5-Hydroxytryptamine 3 receptor (HTR3A) induces neuronal excitation and neurotransmitter release in peripheral and central nervous systems. Messenger RNA encoding this receptor is localised in the brain, spinal cord, and heart. It also initiates intracellular signalling cascades. HRT3A can be used to treat alcoholic patients by regulating the H3K9 histone acetylation in HRT3A promoter region. HTR3A is linked to human colon cancer.
