Histone-lysine N-methyltransferase 2D (KMT2D) is also termed as MLL2, ALR and MLL4. It belongs to the family of mammalian histone H3 lysine 4 (H3K4) methyltransferases. KMT2D is expressed in adult tissues. This gene is located on human chromosome 12q12-13.

KMT2D also plays a vital role in tumorigenesis. This protein is essential for enhancer activation and cell type-specific gene expression. It modulates development, differentiation, metabolism and tumor suppression. KMT2D plays a key role in early embryonic development.
