The MYST family of histone acetyltransferases, which includes MYST1, is named for the founding members MOZ (MYST3; MIM 601408), yeast YBF2 and SAS2, and TIP60 (HTATIP; MIM 601409). All members of this family contain a MYST region of about 240 amino acids with a canonical acetyl-CoA-binding site and a C2HC-type zinc finger motif. Most MYST proteins also have a chromodomain involved in protein-protein interactions and targeting transcriptional regulators to chromatin (Neal et al., 2000 [PubMed 10786633]).[supplied by OMIM].
MYST histone acetyltransferase 1 (MYST1), also known as human males absent on the first (HMOF), is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 16p11.2. The encoded protein belongs to MYST family of histone acetyltransferases (HATs). MYST1 contains N-terminal chromodomain, involved in binding noncoding RNA and a central MYST histone acetyltransferase domain.

MYST histone acetyltransferase 1 (MYST1) catalyzes the acetylation of Lys16 residue in histone H4. It also plays a vital role in various cellular processes, such as gene transcription, cell proliferation, differentiation and DNA repair response. MYST1 is essential for maintaining normal chromatin architecture of all cells of early male and female embryos.Aberrations in the gene expression leads to certain type of primary cancers.
