一般描述
UCHL5 (ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L5) is a cysteine protease and belongs to ubiquitin-specific proteases and ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolases family. The encoded protein is a deubiquitinating enzyme that is connected with the 26S proteasome. The active site of the protein consists of a six-stranded antiparallel β-sheet at the center and α-helices are flanked on its either sides. The gene is found to be expressed in the cytoplasm as well as the nucleus.

UCHL5 (ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L5) regulates proteasome activity by deubiquitination. It is known to serve as biomarker in the prognosis of cancers such as rectal cancer and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Unlike other members of the ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase family, UCHL5 might be able to process polyubiquitin chain. UCHL5 is necessary for correct cell cycle progression. Downregulation of the gene leads to a halt in the cell cycle at G0/G1.
