一般描述
Calcium folinate, the reduced form of folic acid, finds application in the treatment of methotrexate overdose and in high-dose methotrexate chemotherapy as a chemotherapy protective drug to bring down the latter′s toxicity. When combined with fluorouracil, it is reported to be effective in the management of bowel cancer wherein it acts by inhibiting thymidylate synthase and augmenting the effect of fluorouracil.

叶酸拮抗剂通过结合二氢叶酸还原酶并阻滞叶酸转化为四氢叶酸盐发挥作用，而亚叶酸钙则可抵消叶酸拮抗剂的作用。在医学上，亚叶酸钙在甲氨蝶呤治疗后用于降低甲氨蝶呤的毒性。亚叶酸钙还可用于增强癌症治疗中 5-氟尿嘧啶的细胞毒性效应。
